JAG exists to protect the independence, dignity, and effectiveness of South Africa's lower courts.
Most people encounter the justice system through district and regional courts. These courts resolve everyday disputes, protect rights, and help keep communities stable.
Section 165 of the Constitution requires courts to be independent and subject only to the Constitution and the law. It also requires organs of state to assist and protect the courts so they can work with dignity and effectiveness.
JAG's concern is that lower courts remain constrained by outdated structures and unequal treatment. That weakens public confidence and limits equal access to justice.
The remedy is practical: one judiciary, fair resources, safe courts, equal status, and meaningful participation by lower court judges and court users in decisions that affect them.
JAG pursues that remedy through engagement, public education, and litigation where unresolved disputes require it.
Purpose

Judges Action Group brings together lower court judges and supporters who believe the courts closest to the public must receive the same constitutional respect as every other court.
The aim is to end unequal treatment, strengthen judicial independence, and restore dignity to the people who rely on lower courts every day.
